Test Facilities Design Engineer

DESCRIPTION:  As part of a small team, you will support the design, development, construction, operations, and maintenance of test and launch facilities for liquid rocket engine components and vehicles.  You’ll need hands-on engineering and project management skills; and the ability to work under dynamic conditions.
  • Define requirements for the design, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning of new and existing test stand and launch systems
    • Design and model piping, tubing, and structural systems
    • Perform fluids, stress, and structural analysis of new or modified designs
    • Create final drawings, coordinate drawing approvals, and maintain drawing accuracy
    • Coordinate with suppliers on costs, schedule, and technical design requirements
  • Participate, prepare and develop the execution of design reviews, readiness reviews, test plans, procedures, process hazard analyses, and data reviews
  • Provide input on work priorities, track work status, provide routine reports in writing and verbally
  • Position is based at Kent with the potential to travel up to 25%
  • Support projects at other Blue Origin facilities as required
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or equivalent
  • 3+ years industry experience in test facility or ground support equipment design
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling and CAD drawings, CREO preferred
  • Technical experience designing or operating high pressure gas systems and cryogenic fluid systems
  • Strong safety mindset and experience, including hands-on experience planning and conducting hazardous or critical operations, directing others, and conducting process hazard assessments
  • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of rocket propellants and rocket engine hardware
  • Previous experience with design and analysis of piping/tubing systems including vacuum jacketed piping and components for cryogenic service.
  • Familiarity with B31.3, ASME Section VIII, and ASME Y14.5
  • Knowledge of standard fluid systems components, capabilities and manufacturers
  • Familiarity with piping, instrumentation, and structural drawings
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
  • M.S. degree in engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in the design, and development propulsion test and launch facilities
  • 5+ years of experience in the design of piping systems using ASME B31.3
  • 5+ years of experience using Bentley AutoPipe or CEASAR II for piping design and analysis
  • Experience related to fabrication, examination and testing of welded piping systems
  • Previous experience managing projects or facilities of a similar magnitude
  • 2+ years’ experience with Autocad P&ID for the creation and modification of piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • 5000+ hours experience with ProE/Creo with Windchill and ProPiping
  • Experience creating fabrication and installation drawings using ProE/Creo
  • 5+ years of experience performing structural stress analysis using both hand calculations and FEA tools (Ansys Workbench preferred)
  • 1+ year experience with AFT Fathom/Arrow fluids analysis software and/or SindaFluint
