Characterization and Analysis Laboratory Technician

DESCRIPTION: As part of a small, rapidly-evolving team, you’ll be responsible for organizing and executing plans to characterize material and hardware samples using a variety of laboratory processes and equipment.  In this hands-on position, you’ll work with engineers and other technicians to develop the materials and processes used to build our launch vehicles and spacecraft.  We seek people who are passionate about space and possess a strong desire to continuously learn and improve.
 
Responsibilities 
  • Perform laboratory analysis per requests and instructions provided by internal customers
  • Summarize, document, and communicate results to stakeholders
  • Develop standard methods, training material, and related documentation for laboratory processes
  • Work with engineers to develop test plans to meet characterization goals
  • Demonstrate strict attention to detail in executing laboratory analyses
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities
  • Identify new equipment to expand laboratory capability and improve responsiveness
  • Safely work with hazardous systems containing chemicals, heat, and/or high pressure
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
  • 3+ years’ experience in analytical/characterization laboratory environment
  • Hands-on experience organizing and executing test plans
  • Basic engineering laboratory skills: weights and measures, chemical hygiene, materials safety planning, personal protective equipment, contamination control, workload organization and planning
  • Strong written and personal computer skills
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
Desired
  • Experience using equipment used for a variety of techniques (specimen preparation, optical and/or scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, mechanical testing, etc.)
  • Familiarity with typical aerospace testing and quality processes
  • Understanding of the types of materials and processes used to fabricate aerospace components
  • Ability to operate manual machine tools (saws, mills, etc.)
Must be physically able to:
  • Work with and around chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Climb stairs and work in small areas
  • Lift and carry 40 pounds
