HIL Hardware Design/Integration Engineer


DESCRIPTION: Join the team that designs, builds, integrates, and operates the hardware environment we use to ensure correctness and performance of the flight software and avionics systems which control our launch vehicles and spacecraft.  This hands-on position requires a commitment to quality and attention to detail commensurate with safe human spaceflight and provides an opportunity to directly impact the history of human space exploration. You will be part of the team that tests all the electronic hardware and software for our vehicles. This position reports into the Flight Sciences team.
  • Integrate flight avionics hardware, COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) hardware, flight software, and simulations to support full system verification and validation testing 
  • Design and develop custom avionics and electrical hardware components to support hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, including signal conditioning and data acquisition for actuator control, RF communication, electrical and hydraulic power, and wire harness elements
  • Operate and maintain the hardware-in-the-loop test facility
  • Design, develop and execute multi-domain integrated system tests in HIL to support flight software qualification and hardware testing
  • Participate in all aspects of integrated hardware/software system verification and validation including test planning, test execution, troubleshooting, issue resolution, documentation of test results, and data reviews
  • B.S. degree or higher in electrical engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated history of integrating software and hardware systems
  • Solid electrical engineering, digital and analog circuit fundamentals and lab skills 
  • Proficient in the use of standard electronic lab test and troubleshooting equipment
  • Digital and analog circuit design, simulation, assembly, and test, with knowledge of design principles for non-laboratory environments
  • Preference for and ability to thrive as a member of a tightly integrated team
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Experience working in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or system integration labs (SIL)
  • Experience in analog to digital and digital to analog converters, power supply components and design, analog testing/troubleshooting techniques, and signal integrity, layout and grounding principles
  • Applied experience with hard real-time operating systems and embedded systems
  • Board level experience designing hardware from concept through production; strong emphasis on full lifecycle development of new hardware systems -- not small incremental updates to legacy hardware
  • Extensive understanding of instrumentation, interfaces, and sensors including DMMs, DAQ, Power Supplies, Oscilloscopes, DIO, GPIB, Serial-422, UDP, GigE, SPI, switch technologies and topologies, accelerometers, RTDs, thermocouples, and 4-20mA sensors
  • Understanding of metrology, sources of measurement error, and uncertainty analysis
  • Exposure to hardware-in-the-loop environments outside of aerospace (automotive, robotics, medical)
