Orbital Launch Communications Architecture Development Engineer


DESCRIPTION:  As part of a small team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, constructing and activating a site to support launch and recovery of an orbital launch vehicle.   This is a hands-on position leading a small engineering team developing launch site network and communications systems including RF communications, critical avionics networks, and development of an operational communication, command, and control system to support launch and on-orbit operations.  This position involves you in all aspects of design, construction, activation, and flight operations. You will be architecting and building the communication backbone to support test and operation of Blue Origin space vehicles.
  • Developing command, control, and communications system requirements, performing flow down, and verification
  • Design, analysis, development and testing of launch site communication and data systems
  • Developing a command/control capability to support launch and on-orbit space vehicle operations
  • Supporting RF and ground-based communication and network architecture development and trade studies
  • Creating interface definition and control documents, drawings, specifications and other documentation
  • Overseeing system build-out, procuring components and materials; managing vendor/subcontractor performance
  • Planning and conducting tests, and reviewing data
  • Communicating and applying mission assurance principles throughout the organization
  • Maintaining and reporting on activity schedule, budget and technical status
  • Coaching, mentoring and technically assisting other engineers
  • Identifying opportunities for safety improvements and operational cost savings
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in design and development of large scale communications networks.  
  • Experience in command, control, and communications systems on recently developed launch vehicles or spacecraft in one or more of the following areas:
    • Site-wide communications, instrumentation, and data handling systems 
    • Ground- and/or space-based networks for global command and control of space vehicles
    • Operations and maintenance of large complex systems such as launch pads or test stands
  • Recent experience leading execution of mission critical operations 
  • Experience leading and managing small- to medium-sized teams integrating multiple subsystems to meet a top level system requirement.  Strong personnel management and mentoring skills.
  • Project management, budget management and team leadership skills
  • Strong safety mindset and experience, including hands-on experience planning and conducting hazardous or critical operations
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Experience with avionics systems and associated standards 
  • Knowledge of RF compatibility standards
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, manufacturing fabrication and assembly processes, and quality control
