Structural Engineering Manager, Crewed Vehicle Structures


DESCRIPTION:  As part of a unique and highly skilled team, you will lead the functional structural design for all Blue Origin Crewed Vehicles.  This is a hands-on position, with a portion of time being spent on individual technical contributions and a majority of time being spent working with direct reports as a technical reviewer and mentor.
  • Leadership and professional development of team members
  • Technical guidance for structural design approaches, use of optimization tools, best practices for design of metallic and composite structures
  • Development and continuous improvement of crewed vehicle engineering tools, best practices and design standards for primary and secondary structural systems
  • Growing and maturing the organization through recruiting, hiring, and training of new team members
  • Support development and execution of project plans (including resource planning, management, scheduling and cost estimation) for crewed vehicles throughout the product development lifecycle
  • Provide project support throughout product development lifecycle via configuration development and trade studies; system requirements development, flow down and verification; development of scope and resource loaded schedules; critical product and technology review, and project gated reviews; critical supplier and product development; cost and safety improvement; and material and product technology development
  • Support structural component and vehicle level testing including test planning and execution, operations, data reduction, and analysis.
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering
  • 2+ years of experience leading and managing small project teams
  • 10+ years of experience with the detail design of aerospace or equivalent type structural systems, materials and manufacturing processes
  • Proficient in the use of lean processes, such as Agile, Lean, or TDS, applied to hardware design efforts
  • Highly process driven with an emphasis on continuous improvement
  • Working knowledge of structural materials, manufacturing processes, product development and analysis methods
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Knowledge in the use of 3D CAD and PLM systems and configuration control tools (prefer Creo/Windchill)
  • Knowledge in the use of analysis codes: Nastran, ANSYS, Optistruct, LS/Dyna
  • Knowledge in the application of rapid product development methods and technologies
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, manufacturing fabrication and assembly processes, and quality control
