Sr. Structural Engineer


DESCRIPTION:   Lead a unique and highly skilled team in the design, development and testing of structural subsystems for launch vehicles and crew modules.  This hands-on position, focusing on structures and involves you in all aspects of design, analysis, assembly, testing and flight operations.
  • Design, analysis, development and testing of primary and secondary airframe structures
  • Provide technical guidance for integration and general Liaison Engineering support 
  • Coach, mentor and technically assist junior engineers
  • Support configuration development and trade studies
  • Early definition of interfaces and controlling documents, striking appropriate balance between timely definition and technical risk
  • Develop system requirements, performing flow down, and verification
  • Create and maintaining a detailed prioritized schedule of activity and work with assigned team members to deliver structural designs on schedule and on budget
  • Work with the configuration and assembly teams to properly prioritize procurement activities by identifying long lead procurements
  • Create interface definition and control documents
  • Create drawings, specifications and other documentation
  • Oversee fabrication and assembly services; procure components and materials; and manage  vendor/subcontractor performance
  • Plan and conduct tests, and review data
  • Manage projects within a matrix organization, including:
    • Creating and maintaining detailed prioritized schedules
    • Delivering structural designs on schedule and budget
    • Working with the configuration and assembly teams to properly prioritize procurement, identify long lead procurements and generally ensure parts are kitted for integration when needed and within budget
    • Maintaining and reporting on activity schedule, budget and technical status
  • Identify opportunities for safety improvements and operational cost savings
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering
  • 8+ years of experience with automotive, aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle structures
  • Experience on recently developed vehicles in one or more of the following areas:
    • Vehicle load path distribution and first order strength assessment and sizing
    • Skin-stringer and sandwich panel fuselage design
    • Shell buckling and/or compressive failure critical structural element design
    • Material selection, compatibility and manufacturing techniques
    • Iso/Ortho grid structure design
  • Strong mechanical design and integration skills using 3D CAD software
  • Experience with GD&T analysis (ASME Y14.5)
  • Familiar with ASME Y14.100 and Y14.41
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Experience with Creo (Pro/E) Wildfire 5 or greater, Windchill 10
  • Experience with lean processes as applied to design efforts – Agile product development methods for hardware engineering would be highly desirable.
  • Expertise with analysis codes: Nastran, ANSYS, Optistruct, LS/Dyna
  • Awareness of composite design and analysis matters
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, manufacturing fabrication and assembly processes, and quality control
  • Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing
